farewell DESSIE J JOHNSON ….typical run-of-the-mill bastard… R.I.P.

2018 will be remembered as a sad year with lots of great muso’s passing away but none is sadder or will be missed more than my great friend and drummer…Dessie J Johnson (aka. Greg Gilbert)

Dessie J Johnson

Dessie was, as described by himself:

the World’s largest midget and World’s youngest oldman, a self confessed genius and lazy drummer….and proud of them all…

80’s pre punk and indie bands like “the Pits”, “This 5 minutes” Tex Perkins & the Dum Dum’s” and ” the Johnson’s” are band names that Dessie was know for….drumming out thousands of tunes over the decades before landing in syncopation with southern Cajan bootleg band “SWAMPHOG”

Rare EP “10 Miles Deep” circa 1998

A great fusion was created with Guitarist/Vocalist Grant Turnbill and Bassist/Vocalist Buzz Talay playing the Cajun sounds of bands like Tito & Tarantula, Tony Joe White, Huevos Rancheros, 1st Edition and the like….

With the relocation of Turnbill resulting in him leaving the band, a replacement was difficult to find to maintain the unique sound that Swamphog was providing. It was then decided that Talay moved to guitar/vocals as half the repertoire was his vocals anyway.

Finding a bass player was proving almost as difficult, for at the time, Talay, was using a 5 string Fender and playing a lot of low “B” notes, which combined with the super syncopated drumming from Dessie j Johnson gave very low down swamp feel.

After a few auditions, Chris Arthur entered the room and seemed to fit nicely but with other projects etc. the band was stalling a little and consequently had a hiatus for a few months.

At the time, Dessie J Johnson had also been filling in for a drummer-less outfit called “the Tractor Jacks” and had done some gigs around the rockabilly scene in Brisbane. These guys wanted to record a song and in true form Dessie bought them over to the BUZZARD RECORDS studio on the south side to record.

Tractor Jacks were then struggling with a line up changes and in the pursuing months lost their lead guitarist just weeks before the 2005 “Wintersun” festival.

Once again, in true form, Dessie J was on the blower asking Talay if he could do a 1 gig ONLY fill in ……”10 songs of rockabilly” that’s all Buzz”….”you’ll be right..you’ll kill em”….

Last year Belinda’s Big Bus Tour set off on a journey around Australia to break down barriers for Brain Injury Awareness. Belinda drove 8,121 km in 32 days distributing resources, attending events and meeting with families affected by the invisible disability all over the country. The story featured in numerous newspapers as well as on television news and ABC radio. Belinda became an official ambassador for Synapse Reconnecting Lives (formerly brain injury association of Australia) after becoming an advocate for those affected following on from her own sons near fatal car accident and resulting TBI. This years campaign has moved from buses to bikes with the “Bay to Brisbane Bike Ride for Brain Injury” set to take place in the lead up to brain injury awareness week on Saturday 18 August.

The Bike ride will commence in Hervey Bay and finish at the GRAND HOTEL in Cleveland. There, all will enjoy the fantastic Alt Australia/Americana sounds of BUZZ TALAY & the STONE RIVER boys. Special guest appearance by JULIA “SNAKE BOSS” BAKER..a show not too be missed as you enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the GRAND HOTEL’s food and ales.

Please follow Belinda’s Big Bus Tour for regular updates and further information on this very important event and cause or message us here at BUZZARD PRODUCTIONS.

So get on your bike (all makes welcome) and make a great day off it where your support will be appreciated.

Exciting news announced….

Live blog.jpg

Buzzard Productions is proud to announce…as of   January 2017 ….we have  “Live” recording available for hire.

Whether you are a Soloist, Duo, Trio or Band, we can set up for a “live ” 16 track, fully editable, live recording of your band playing a gig, rehearsing, writing or any other application that your band might require a record of your work for…

This service is available with our P.A. hire (giving a real live feel..) or without, to record a live session with a more produced feel. Being fully mobile, we can come to your garage, your lounge room, or even local hall (invite some friends too) and record your music live….

no venue available????

Alternatively…you can record live in the BUZZARD BAR studio…this is the most cost effective as you come to us saving on travel and set up…leaving more funds for your recordings..

Your tracks can then be re mixed & mastered at BUZZARD BAR studio at a discounted fee or taken to another digital studio. Regardless, you end up with your recorded tracks on media to upload to YouTube, Facebook or any social media.

16 tracks can be of any combination with the most popular being:

4 x Vocals
5 x Drums (Kick, snare, Hi-hat, 2 x Overhead)
2 x Acoustic
2 x Electric Guitar
1 x Bass guitar

go to our “Studio” page and find out what is available for hire…
